Swimming with Your Baby
Swimming with your baby can be a great experience. Most babies love the warm water and it can be a bonding experience for the parent and baby. If you are planning a warm weather vacation where swimming will be involved it is best to take your baby swimming before the vacation so they will be comfortable in the water once you reach your destination.
Most physicians recommend that you wait to start swimming with your baby until they are between 3 and 6 months old. Check with the pool or vacation destination to find out if they have any age restrictions.
Try to go swimming at an off-peak time the first couple of times you go. Call ahead and ask the staff at the centre, they will be able to give you this information.
You can either use disposable swim diapers or reusable swim diapers, like the Kushies brand swim diapers. Remember to bring a warm towel for baby and yourself, your diaper bag, and a change of clothes. Once you are ready to get in the pool remember to hold your baby close and maintain eye contact with them until they are comfortable in the pool.
I use this great product made by Heart2Heart. It is a baby carrier that is made of 'quick-dry' fabric and is made to use in the water. I put my baby in the carrier and into the pool we go. It gives both me and the baby the security that we both want. For more information on the Heart2Heart baby carrier for the water click here.
The baby may not become comfortable during the first swim, but it will come with time. Once they are more comfortable try playing with some toys. A rubber duck or plastic watering can work great. Take your baby out of the pool if they start to show any signs of being cold or they have been in for longer than 20-30 minutes.
