Swaddling Your Baby
A baby loves familiarity and travelling with a baby is taking them into unfamiliar territory. When you travel you should try to have as many familiar things as possible for your baby and swaddling is something you can do anywhere. Swaddling should be started as early on in their life as possible so they are comfortable with it.
If the nurses or midwives were anything like the ones I had when my son was born they swaddled him right away. One of the nurses explained to me that young babies love to be swaddled because it helps to stop their flailing arms and allows them to focus on other calming techniques you are using.
- Swaddling your baby helps them to sleep longer, be less fussy and helping them to keep calm
- Since most newborns sleep better when they are swaddled, it will help the unfamiliar become familiar
- Babies don’t need to be wrapped tightly, just snug enough so that their arms can’t flail loose from the blankets
- A great swaddling blanket is lightweight cotton so your baby doesn’t overheat and it should have some stretch to it so you can swaddle them properly. We think the one that we use is the best on the market. Take a look.
How to swaddle your baby:
- Lay a blanket on a flat surface in a diamond shape with the top corner folded down
- Place your baby on the blanket on their back with their head on the fold
- Pull the left corner across your baby’s body and tuck in under their back on the right side
- Pull the bottom corner up under your baby’s chin
- Bring the right corner across their body and tuck it under their back on the left side
