Staying Active During a Second Pregnancy
I have always been an active person. I was active before having my son and during my first pregnancy. During my second pregnancy though I realized how difficult it was to stay active during pregnancy with a toddler. Not only was I tired from being pregnant, but I was also playing with my toddler non stop. I found a few helpful tips to staying active during this exciting and busy time.
1. Find something active you can do with your toddler. If you enjoy walking or jogging, get a good stroller and get out there. I have always enjoyed jogging so I purchased a good jogging stroller and continued to jog through my first and second trimester. When I found myself slowing down in my third trimester I continued walking with my toddler. He enjoys getting outside as much as I do.
2. Find someone to be active with. You need someone to continue to motivate you to be active when you are pregnant for the second time. You will find many excuses to not be active, but having a partner will help. They can motivate you to get out on the days you just want to stay in.
3. Find time to be active when your toddler is not around. I found being active on my lunch break from work was a great time to get out. I didn’t have to worry about my toddler, because he was at daycare, so I could just focus on myself. You could go in the morning if your partner is around and able to get your toddler ready for the day, or go in the evening once they are in bed. There are many options; you just have to look for them.
4. Set goals. As your pregnancy progresses it is harder and harder to stay active. If you set goals, like walking a certain distance during your first trimester and gradually shortening the distance as your pregnancy progresses it will be easier to stay active. I was running 10km during my first trimester, 5km during my second trimester and doing a power walk during my third trimester. I found that keeping and setting goals kept me motivated.
5. Remember how good being active can be for you and your pregnancy. You will find if you are active that you have more energy, sleep better and feel better about yourself. After your pregnancy you will get down to your pre-pregnancy weight more quickly.
