Mosquito Safety for Your Baby
We worry more and more about mosquitoes stinging our babies and children. Here are some facts that you can use to help protect your kids.
Until recently products with DEET has been the leading insect repellent to use. DEET continues to be effective mosquito deterrent, but DEET is also a neurotoxin, with potential health risks if overused or used incorrectly. Fortunately, for the health of all of us some DEET-free products have been approved for effective use.
When choosing a DEET-free product look for those products with these active ingredients…
- soybean oil
- citronella oil
- lavender oil
- p-Menthane-3,8-diol (a plant extract)
If you choose to continue to use DEET products, these guidelines will keep applications within safe limits…
- under six months: don’t use repellents that contain DEET
- six months to two years use only one application of 10 percent DEET or less daily
- two to 12 years: no more than three applications of 10 percent or less daily
- do not apply any repellents to children’s hands or faces, and wash them off when they’re no longer needed.
