Camping Recipes for your Dehydrator
We have found in our years of canoe tripping that the best way to pack meals is to use a dehydrator. You can make family size meals that pack away into not much more than a Ziploc bag and weigh next to nothing. You can buy a dehydrator anywhere you buy small appliances.
Some of our favourite dehydrated recipes:
Jen and Ian's Camping Chili
Dehydrate:
- 1 can pasta sauce with 1 can tomato paste
- 1 can drained kidney beans
- 1 can of corn
- 1 carrot, thinly sliced
- 1 celery stalk, thinly sliced
- 1 package of ground beef
Other items to bring:
- Chili seasoning mix
At the campsite:
- Rehydrate the beef, tomato mix and all other items in 3 separate pots
- Once re-hydrated heat the ground beef in the largest pot, add the sauce mixture and heat until warm throughout
- Add one pack of Old El Paso Chili seasoning mix
- Add the rest of the ingredients and warm thoroughly
Note: In order to dehydrate ground beef you must first cook the ground beef and drain off all the fat, if you do not drain it completely it will go rancid. When we dehydrate ground beef we drain the fat and then rinse the ground beef and pat it dry with paper towels before dehydrating it.
Dehydrated Stir Fry
Dehydrate:
- 1 green and 1 red pepper
- 1 zucchini
- 2 carrots
- Other stir fry vegetables as desired
Other items to bring:
- Sweet and sour stir fry sauce
- Minute Rice
- Tortilla shells (optional)
At the campsite:
- Rehydrate the vegetables
- Add the sweet and sour stir fry sauce to a warm pan
- Fry up the vegetables in the sauce
- Make the instant rice in a separate pot
- Serve with alone, on rice or in tortilla shells
