Keeping Baby Warm in the Winter

A big part of living in Canada is dealing with the winter season. My baby and I like to get out of the house every day, but come wintertime I was never sure how exactly he should be dressed.

The first thing I learned was to give myself some extra time. There is no point trying to rush out the door while trying to get those extra layers on. By starting the process an extra five minutes early I am able to avoid a lot of tears and screaming. A good snowsuit or bunting bag has also proved very important for us, they are a great protection against the cold and snow.

On all but the coldest days I am able to dress my son in his regular daytime clothes and just use the snowsuit for heading outdoors. Ours is water repellent so we can use it multiple times a day without having to dry it in between uses.

We have all heard that most heat is lost through the head and this is even truer for babies. That is why as soon as the cold weather starts to hit we get in the habit of wearing a hat everyday.

At first our son was not co-operative and would pull his hat off immediately. We found a hat with ear covers and a string for under the chin. After a few days of pulling at the hat he has given up on it and now gladly accepts it as part of the outdoor routine.

We were also challenged when it came to keeping his hands warm. The obvious solution is mittens, but once again our son hated losing the use of his hands and fingers. When we are just quickly running out to the car we are happy to tuck his hands up in his warm snowsuit, but this strategy did not bode well for longer outdoor excursions. We use oversized mittens that we can pull over the sleeve of his snowsuit, and to date that seems to keep him the happiest and warmest.
