Airline Rules for Baby Travel

The rules for baby travel vary depending on the airline.  The following shows the most recent information for many of the most popular airlines.  If the airline you are interested in is not in the list just let us know and we will get the information for you.
Airline Child Travel Rules

Air Canada

 

  • Children under 2 free of charge within Canada and US if travelling on adult’s lap

  • Ticket required when travelling internationally (about 10% of adult fare plus taxes and surcharges for lap riders)

  •  Formula, baby's milk, or temperature-sensitive medications may be refrigerated on board free of charge

  • Infants not occupying a seat are allowed one piece of checked baggage up to 22.5 kg (50 lbs) with an overall measurement of no more than 115 cm (45 in).

  • Bassinets are available on board for infants, however please call Air Canada reservations at least 48 hours before boarding

Continental Airlines

  • Children under 2 free of charge within US

  • Must travel on adult’s lap

  • International flights require infants to purchase a ticket and are subject to infant fares and taxes

  • Bassinets offered on selected international flights for infants under 22 lbs.

Delta Airlines
  • Children under 2 free of charge within US
  • Must travel on adult’s lap
  • Ticket required when travelling between countries regardless of whether or not the child occupies a seat
  • International ticket price depends on the age of the child, for infants under the age of two and held in the adult's lap, the cost is usually about 10% of the adult fare plus any international taxes and surcharges, which can be significant
  • If the seat next to you remains unoccupied, you may place your infant in the seat using an FAA-approved child restraint.

United Air

  • For travel within the U.S., between the U.S. and Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands and between the U.S. and Canada, infants are not required to occupy a seat

  • Your ticket must be documented as having an infant in seat

  • After reserving your seat you must call 1-800-864-8331 and inform them that an infant will be travelling on your itinerary

  • For international travel, an infant may be required to have a ticket to travel as a lap child

  • Bassinets are provided, free of charge, on all international aircraft

US Airways
  • On domestic flights, one lap child will be accepted without charge when traveling with a paying ticketed passenger age 18 or older
  • International flights, lap children may have to pay 10 percent of the adult fare and any surcharges, may require a paper ticket and are subject to international taxes
